Varjit - Avoided or Omitted Notes

Notes in aThaat that are omitted in Arohi or Avarohi of its derivative Ragas are called Varjit. As in the case of Raga Bhoopali (belonging to Kalyan Thaat), the fourth note called Tivar Madhyama, and the seventh note called Nishadha, are Varjit in Arohi and Avarohi. Such notes are omitted from all the octaves during performance or in composing a melody in any classical form. In folk, movies, or other popular light entertainment music form, this rule may not be applied strictly. In Raga Sham Kalyan notes Ga and Dha are Varjit in Arohi. Having an Audava / Sampooran Jati (see below), its intricate Arohi / Avarohi is written thus:

  • Arohi: Ni(l) Sa Re Ma Re Ma(#) Pa Dha Pa Ni Sa(u)
  • Avarohi: Sa(u) Ni Dha Pa Ma(#) Pa Ga Ma Re Ni(l) Sa
